Early History

1-      In 1066 William the Conqueror gathered an invasion Force in Normandy, France, sailed for and conquered England becoming King William I of England.

2-      Two brothers named Walter and Ilbert from Lassey in Normandy, France assisted Williams conquest.

3-      One author says “King William gave them land from sea to sea in England in gratitude for their service.”

4-      These brothers were Lassey in Normandy, but in England they were “from Lassey” and were de Lacy.

 

America, 1698

1-      Quakers, William and Mary (Parlett) Lacey from Isle of Wight, England arrived in America and settled in Bucks Co., PA in 1698.

2-      Researchers have found no direct link to tie William to the Lasseys of Lassey, France or the de Lacys of the United Kingdom.

3-      Quakers kept very detailed birth, marriage and death records so William and Mary’s information was documented in England and in early America along with next four generations of their descendants in America.

4-      General John Lacey, a cousin line, was active in Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War. One Quaker record reports that “John was dealt with” meaning that pacifist Quakers threw him out of their Society of Friends for actively participating in armed forces.

5-      Amos Lacey married Sarah Hudson in Hagerstown, MD in a civil ceremony, not in a Quaker service (author’s grandpa, Amos Hudson Lacey was great-grandson of Amos and Sarah). Quaker records reported, “Amos Lacey has gone out in marriage.” A present day Quaker says this meant he was disowned by Quakers.

6-      Many records, civil and Quaker, were found in MD and OH for Amos and his descendant lines. Amos regained favor with Quakers in OH and attend some meetings.
